Surprisingly, we found that most all fishermen embed their hook into either
the tail area, or within the chest cavity, when using crayfish as a bait
presentation. We were also surprised to learn many U.P. fishermen didn’t
even use crayfish at all! Crayfish are an ideal U.P. bait item
in many cases... especially when fishing around rocks, gravel or artificially
constructed spawning beds or fish shelters.

Most game fish prefer their quarry at least somewhat active. The livelier
your bait is, the better. Throughout the duration your bait is on your hook, it
should always appear healthy, lively and attracting to fish.
The
best method for keeping crayfish alive on your hook can be achieved by using a
small number 6 or 8 bait holder hook. Embed the eye of the hook underneath
the lower tail, just penetrating the muscle.
This method will give you an
attractive looking bait much longer and also increase your effectiveness when
setting the hook! We've used this method time and time again. It's
the perfect solution to maintaining an active and attractive bait item in rocks,
gravel and sand.
