stage. Ice fishing season is
just about over, and now is the time to get your gear ready for Spring fishing fever.
Also, smelt fishing our
river outlets is only a few short weeks away.
Fishermen are doing well catching white fish. Coho salmon are making their
arrival to food producing river outlets. Munising South Bay, the east channel and west channel are producing some
nice lake trout in 30 to 60 feet depths. Beware of deteriorating ice
conditions.
Hidden secrets are Murrays Bay where you'll find fantastic northern pike and
yellow perch. Trout Bay is offering up some great lake trout fishing.
Smelt Fishing
Smelt fishing in winter you ask? You bet! As soon as we acquire first safe
ice on Munising Bay, head out over to Sand Point- poke a couple of holes
and fish as you would for perch. You certainly may not get a bucket full as you
would netting them in Spring in the Anna River in a good season, however
a couple of dozen can make an excellent fish fry for this time of the season.
You'll be the envy of every smelt connoisseur in the city.
Best time of the season to catch Smelt through the ice is from the end of
February to ice out, which typically happens by the middle/end of April.
Lake ice usually develops by the first or second week in January... but has
been known to start as late as February. Ice Out usually occurs by the middle of
April.
